Boot

England
Boot lies deep in Eskdale, one of the Lake District's most remote valleys, accessible only via winding single-track roads from the A595 coast road or the infamous Hardknott Pass. The gentler coastal approach through Gosforth takes you past traditional Cumbrian farmland before climbing into the fells, whilst the mountain route over Hardknott tests both nerve and gearbox with its 1-in-3 gradients. Boot marks the end of the line for the delightful Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, the 15-inch gauge steam line that's been puffing through this valley since Victorian times.
