Bishopthorpe lies just south of York beside the River Ouse, easily reached via the A1036 from the city centre in about 10 minutes. The A64 provides connections to Leeds and the motorway network for longer journeys, whilst local roads link nearby villages across the Vale of York. The village centres on the magnificent Bishopthorpe Palace, which has served as the Archbishop of York's residence since medieval times.
