Biggings lies on Mainland Shetland's western edge, about 40km north of Lerwick via the A970 and local roads across the island's peat moorlands. The drive from Sumburgh Airport takes roughly an hour, passing through characteristic Shetland landscape of rolling hills and scattered crofts. The name derives from Old Norse "byggingar," meaning farmsteads, testament to the area's millennium of Norse heritage.
