Bedlington lies in Northumberland's former mining country, easily reached via the A193 from Cramlington or the A189 from Newcastle. The A1 provides longer-distance access, whilst local routes connect to Blyth and Ashington. The town's claim to fame is the Bedlington Terrier, the distinctive curly-coated breed developed here for ratting in the coal pits.
