Basildon, a post-war new town in Essex, lies 40 kilometres east of London via the A127 and M25. The A13 offers an alternative London route, whilst the A176 connects north to junction 29. Popular journeys include the half-hour drive to London, quick trips to Lakeside Shopping Centre, and the coastal run to Southend. The town boasts the distinctive Brooke House tower, once Essex's tallest building.
