Barnet perches on North London's edge where the capital meets Hertfordshire, built along the old Roman Watling Street. The A1 runs straight through as the Great North Road, offering direct routes to central London 16 kilometers south or continuing north toward Scotland. Junction 23 of the M25 sits nearby, connecting to Heathrow and the wider motorway network, whilst the A411 and A5109 serve local areas including High Barnet's Northern line station. The town still holds its ancient September horse fair, dating from a 1199 royal charter.
