Balaruminmore lies on Colonsay, one of Scotland's most remote inhabited islands, accessible only by CalMac ferry from Oban (2 hours 20 minutes) to Scalasaig port, then 4km by single-track road through Upper Kilchattan. The settlement's name derives from Gaelic "Baile ar Ruigh Mòr," meaning "township of the big shieling," referring to ancient summer cattle grazing grounds.
