Backworth is a former mining village in North Tyneside, positioned between Newcastle and the coast on the A19 corridor. The A1056 connects eastward whilst local roads link neighbouring Shiremoor and Killingworth. Newcastle lies 8 miles south, with the airport 15 miles northwest. The restored colliery wheel remains the area's most recognisable landmark.
