Athy lies where the River Barrow meets the Grand Canal in southwest Kildare, serving as a major commuter hub 72 kilometers from Dublin. The M9 motorway runs straight through, connecting Dublin north and Waterford south, while the N78 links Carlow and Tullamore. Regular train services to Dublin Heuston provide an alternative to driving. The town sits in prime horse country with flat agricultural land stretching in all directions. White's Castle, a medieval tower house, overlooks the River Barrow bridge where Athy first grew up around an ancient crossing point.
