Ampleforth lies in North Yorkshire's Howardian Hills, reached via the A19 from York then the B1363 through Brandsby, or from the A1 via Thirsk and the A170. The village centres around Ampleforth Abbey and College, a prominent Benedictine monastery and school whose striking 1960s abbey church towers above the surrounding countryside.
