Althorne is a small Essex village on the Dengie Peninsula, about 50km east of London via the A130 and B1010. Most visitors arrive from Chelmsford or use it as a base for exploring Burnham-on-Crouch and the coastal areas. London Southend Airport lies 25km southwest. The village sits amid flat agricultural land typical of this part of Essex, with St. Andrew's Church housing a rare 13th-century wooden knight's effigy.
