Altanduin lies deep in Sutherland's Flow Country, accessible via the A897 between Helmsdale and Lairg. This remote Highland spot serves travelers crossing the peat bogs and scattered lochs of Scotland's northern wilderness. The harsh climate brings long winters and brief summers, whilst the nearest facilities are in Helmsdale, 29km away. The name derives from Gaelic "Allt an Duin" - stream of the fort - referencing ancient defensive earthworks still visible on the overlooking hillside.
