Aherla is a handy village on the N22 about 20 kilometers southwest of Cork city, perfectly placed for anyone heading to Killarney or the Ring of Kerry. It's a grand spot for Cork commuters and makes a natural stop on one of Ireland's busiest touring routes. Cork Airport is only 15 kilometers away, so it's dead convenient for visitors flying in. The village sits at the foot of the Shehy Mountains, and you can still see the ruins of Carrigaphooca Castle, a 15th-century tower house that once guarded this old crossing point.
