Achness lies deep in the Sutherland Highlands, reached via the A836 through Altnaharra. This remote settlement sits in the River Naver valley, surrounded by blanket bog and dramatic Highland scenery. Most visitors pass through on longer touring routes, though the area offers excellent stargazing thanks to virtually no light pollution in this sparsely populated corner of Scotland.
