Achilty lies along the A835 between Tore and Garve, serving as a Highland gateway for traffic heading to Ullapool and the northwest coast. The route connects to the A9 at Tore, with most visitors arriving from Inverness about 25 kilometres away. The area takes its name from the Gaelic "Achadh Choille," meaning "field of the wood."
