Abbeyshrule sits along the River Inny in County Longford, about 15 kilometres southwest of Longford town and 20 kilometres northeast of Athlone. The R392 provides the main approach from Longford, connecting to the N4 Dublin-Sligo route, while the R390 links through Glasson from Athlone. The N55 runs nearby to the west for connections to Granard. The village serves as a handy stopping point between larger centres in the midlands. The substantial stone ruins of a Cistercian abbey from 1200 stand beside the river, giving the place its name and marking its medieval heritage.
