Abbeyhill occupies a prime spot in central Edinburgh, just east of the Old Town and within easy reach of both Princes Street and Holyrood Palace. The area sits on relatively level ground, unusual for Edinburgh, making it straightforward to navigate by car. Main routes include the A1 through nearby Canongate for city centre access, plus quick connections to the A720 bypass for longer journeys to Glasgow or the Borders. With over 200 EV charging points across central Edinburgh, electric vehicle drivers are well catered for. The neighbourhood takes its name from the medieval Holyrood Abbey, whose atmospheric ruins remain visible just down the hill.
